On the 19th of October we flew
from Brussels to Venice.
Venice is one of the most expensive cities
we’ve visited. Because everything has to transported over water, most things
you buy including accommodation have a water tax.
Our flight arrived late at night so decided
to stay at a cheaper hotel off the Island. The following day we caught a bus on
to the main island and then a water taxi across to the island where our hostel
was located.
We stayed at the Generator Hostel. It was
quite a large hostel with a bit of a hotel feel. The downstairs bar area was
well designed with different spots to chill out. The bunk beds in the dorm
rooms were great too. Each bed had it’s own light, socket and a draw under the
bed to keep personal belongings.
That day once settled in at the hostel we
caught the water taxi back to the main island and walked around the town. We visited Piazza San Marco where the bell tower is located. Walked past the Rialto bridge and
weaved through many small lanes containing various stores and restaurants. All
of a sudden it started pouring and we didn’t have an umbrella so we went into
the closest restaurant and had dinner. We ordered a pizza and pasta to share,
both very delicious.
Eventually the rain subsided but not enough
for us to keep exploring so we headed back to the hostel.
The following day we went back to the main
island so we could go to the market behind the Rialto bridge. Unfortunately not
many stalls were open (it was a Tuesday)
but we still managed to get all the essentials for our picnic lunch
including some cheese, salami, bread and
wine. Then we caught the water taxi across to Murano Island. Murano is known
for it’s many glass blowing factories that produce various pieces from
sculptures to vases, plates and glasses.
We found a nice spot here to have our
picnic lunch and then caught the water taxi back to our hostel.
That night we had dinner at a restaurant
next to the hostel selling cheap pizza and pasta. Then we had a couple more
drinks at the hostel before heading up the road to the Hilton Hotel. Here they
have a sky bar which claims to have the best views of Venice. After a couple of
cocktails we decided to call it a night as we had to catch an early train in
the morning to Genoa.
