Berlin, Germany

On the 9th of October we stayed for 4 nights at an airbnb apartment in Berlin. Unfortunately it rained for most of our stay so we couldn’t really make the most of our time in this amazing city. Instead we spent a lot of time shopping, dodging giant rain drops and researching our next destinations.

Berlin Light Festival
We were lucky enough to be in the city during the festival of lights. The festival involves many of the cities landmarks being brought to life by videos being projected on to them. On our first night in Berlin we went searching to see some of the festival but only saw a couple of the festivals features including Brandenburg Gate.

Brandenburg Gate
We originally planned to do a bike riding tour of the city the following day but due to the heavy rain we rescheduled for the following day hoping it would bring better weather.

Thankfully it did. It didn’t rain once on our 5 hour bike tour of Berlin city. We rode to all the major landmarks around town and listened to our tour guide share stories about Berlin’s history. We saw the area where Hitler’s bunker was located (it is now a car park), visited the Holocaust memorial, rode past the zoo, through Charlie’s Check Point and finished back at the TV tower.

The following night we went on a pub crawl. Surprisingly most of the group were German! We had a great time, starting off at a communist bar followed by a rock bar and lastly an underground bar before heading to Matrix nightclub. At each bar we got free shots and really cheap drinks which meant the night ended quite early for some! It was great to experience the Berlin nightlife and reminded me a lot of Melbourne.

As it continued to rain for the rest of our duration we didn’t get to do much but still really enjoyed our time in Berlin and would love to see it in all it’s glory during summer!

On our last day we departed to Amsterdam. Usually we could have got an overnight bus but they don’t run on Sunday’s so we ended up caughting a bus to Dusseldorf and then 3 trains before we finally arrived at Amsterdam Central station just before midnight.
